N-hexane is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon in petroleum and a major component of petroleum ether and naphtha. Its chemical formula is C6H14, and it belongs to the class of straight-chain saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons. At room temperature, it is a colorless, transparent liquid with a slight petroleum odor. It is volatile, and its vapor is heavier than air. It forms explosive mixtures with air with explosion limits of 1.18% to 7.4% (volume fraction). N-hexane is widely used as a solvent for edible oil extraction, a rubber solvent, an artificial leather finishing agent, a precision device cleaner, a clothing detergent, a pharmaceutical tablet detergent, and in the preparation of mixed solvents.

APPLICATIONS

n-Hexane is an organic solvent with good viscosity. It is commonly used in rubber, food, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, footwear, tape, ball making, grinding, leather, textiles, furniture, and paint industries, as a diluent, cleaning solvent, and adhesive. It can also be used as a solvent for extracting seed oils (such as soybean, cottonseed, linseed, peanut, and safflower oils), and as a raw material for polymers such as polypropylene and polyethylene.
